I've been trying to improve my 'comic book' chiaroscuro style lately, with emphasis on the solid black areas that contribute to the form of the figure. My default method in illustration over the past couple of years has been mostly a linear one until recently when I've had my world rocked by a series of graphic novels illustrated by utter masters of pencil, pen and ink. Guys like Tim Sale, David Mazzucchelli, Frank Miller, Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons, Dave McKean and Dave Johnson have blown me away with their art.
Prior to becoming an illustration student a couple of years ago I was a dyed in the wool art history buff. I couldn't see past the old masters and I wasn't interested either. They were the epitome of everything I thought art was and as a result I was completely ignorant of contemporary Illustration.
I am glad that I spent years meticulously copying the likes of Leonardo, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Durer, Ingres, Raphael, Michelangelo, blah blah blah et al, but I'm a digi artist now, and I wanna draw chicks with uzi's.
I've been digging heavily on Lee Bermejo of late, he is it, and the shit. Like Prince.
The girl is based on a cool photo on the awesome pixelovely figure and gesture drawing website.

After 'Napoleon Crossing the Alps' by Jacques Louis David, however, instead of Napoleon on his horse we have a chimpanzee on a rhino. The more discerning of you may notice that the rhino is in fact some sort of cross between a black, indian and white rhino. Well bully for you. Also, that monkeys don't ride other animals donned with capes and strapped with an uzi. Well screw you David Attenborough!

Been working on this over the past two days with pencil, pen and ink then photoshop.
The Man of Steel is looking pretty badass and un-big blue boy scout straight outta Kansas, which can be directly attributed to my just having finished LUTHER the Graphic novel written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated stunningly by Lee Bermejo.
In the novel Superman, viewed from the eyes of Lex Luther, is a distant and malevolent alien to be treated with the utmost suspicion and not fetted as some sort of a saviour.
This was in the forefront of my mind while doing this.

Digi painting is a weak area for me although I'm fairly pleased with this effort. It's my 3rd attempt starting and finishing a painted piece entirely in photoshop.
Based on a self portrait by Rembrandt which is on a postcard on our study wall.
The likeness is totally off, but I think I nailed his bulbous nose.

Cloud Atlas Character Concepts

Taken from David Mitchell's novel'Cloud Atlas' these are character ideas for Papa Song and Sonmi~451. The former being a holographic corporate diety and the face of Papa Song's Diner, and the latter a waitress/server at said diner who is also a clone and thus a second class citizen afforded total contempt by the people of a capitalist totalitarian future Korea.

This is a drawing from a couple of weeks ago based on a mundane day(maybe hungover?) in my flat. It's pretty basic and in a sort of collage format consisting of the arduous daily grind of staring out of window, keepy uppy with inflatable globe, watching le tour and consuming filthy instant coffee.
Round about this time I was totally digging on the illustrations of Olivier Kugler(check him out!) and consider this to be a crappy and rather shoddy imitation of his style.
